Many posts about my dog, Dahlia, and my transports are public. Anything about the rest of my personal life is friends locked. I'm very glad to add friends...just comment!

I went over to Helping Hounds today to take some photos of Nelly, a dog who has been there for WAY too long. She's a good girl, but SO high energy. Danielle (the trainer) is teaching her impulse control and working with all that energy but what she really needs is a job. She'd be a great dog for a lot of different sports. She's fast, focused, and athletic. I hope she finds a home soon!

Anyone have any guesses on her breed mix? I finally realized who she reminds me of. [livejournal.com profile] rozae's Figlet.

For those not in [livejournal.com profile] petbulls...

Dahlia received her presents from the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] thecuddlycactus yesterday. She was SUPER fascinated by the box. SOMETHING smelled good, that's for sure!

SchwantnerThis is a hard one to introduce. I first heard this work sometime early on in my undergraduate college days. I can't say I fell totally in love with it at first. I still found 20th century works to be difficult to listen to, but the work quickly grew on me, especially due to one section.

But we'll get into that shortly.

Joseph Schwantner is a prolific American composer originally from Chicago. Unlike many composers, his main musical instrument was not piano but was, instead, guitar. I'm most familiar with his wind ensemble work, rather than orchestral, but he's written in both genres, as well as chamber music. His list of commissions is incredibly long. His music is known for its unique colors and his ability to draw on music from a huge variety of musical sources.

I love this quotation from him about his music: "I didn’t realize until many years later just how important the guitar was in my thinking...to get to the bottom line, when I think about my music, its absolutely clear to me the profound influence of the guitar in my music. When you look at my pieces, first of all is the preoccupation with color. The guitar is a wonderfully resonant and colorful instrument. Secondly, the guitar is a very highly articulate instrument. You don’t bow it, you pluck it and so the notes are very incisive. My musical ideas, the world I seem to inhabit, is highly articulate. Lots of percussion where everything is sharply etched, and then finally, those sharply articulated ideas often hang in the air, which is exactly what happens when you play an E major chord on the guitar. There are these sharp articulations, and then this kind of sustained resonance that you can easily do in percussion - a favorite trick of mine! I think it is right in my bone marrow. I don’t think there is any question about that. I think my music would look differently if I were a clarinet player. So it doesn’t mean I sit around thinking about the guitar when I am writing a piece. Not at all! There is something fundamental about how I think about music, that I think comes from my experiences as a young kid trying to play everything I could on the instrument."

Ok so back to the work. There I was sitting in Hosmer Hall listening to the wind ensemble perform it when somewhere in the middle of it, about 6:30 in, this brass chorale came out of nowhere and almost knocked me out of my seat. My hair stood up on my arms and I leaned forward and just GAPED. I couldn't believe it. You see, this was the warmup the brass section played before each of our marching band competitions. It was just this MOMENT out there before we went onto the field. They'd start and we'd all stop warming up, drift closer, listen intently, and then cheer when it was over. It basically worked us all up and at that moment we were ready. It was a "call to arms" of sort. I had always assumed Nick (our arranger) had written it. I was shocked to find out where it really came from and floored to have that brass chorale heard in such a different situation.

...and the mountains rising nowhere was Schnwatner's first work for wind ensemble. It was commissioned by the Eastman Wind Ensemble and premiered in 1977. The work is dedicated to children's author Carol Adler. The title comes from one of her poems.

Arioso
arioso bells
sepia
moon-beams
an afternoon sun blanked by rain
and the mountains rising nowhere
the sound returns
the sound and the silence chimes

Schwantner said of the work: "While the work is not specifically programmatic, the poem nevertheless acted as the creative impetus for the composition and provided for me an enigmatic, complex, and powerful imagery creating a wellspring of musical ideas and feelings in sympathetic resonance with the poem."

You can listen to the work here. That brass chorale I mentioned above starts around 6:30.

It was a gorgeous afternoon here, high 40s and partly cloudy so I decided to take Dahlia down to the park to "take a few photos."

A few turned out to be 312. Oops.

So here they all are!

Just kidding... )

Another "Dahlia learns a new trick" photo. Or at least, Dahlia sort of learns a new trick. I wanted a photo of her upside down. She knows "roll over" so getting her to actually STOP in the middle of rolling over was hard. But I succeeded. To a degree.

Rather than looking all cute with her paws curled up next to her, I got a dog who stretched out oddly with her paws waving around awkwardly in the air.

I know most of my Flist saw these couple photos already but I LOVE THEM so much that I'm reposting them for my "100 things."

I really wanted a photo of Dahlia laying with her head cutely buried in some leaves. So out I went with a bunch of hot dogs and my camera and trained her to put her head down and keep it down. I still have work to do if I decide I want to really have her learn it but she picked it up SO quickly. I was super impressed.

I was playing around with my bounce flash last night (something I haven't done since before I got this new camera!). I bought something to attach to it so I could bounce it off it and even use it outside.

This is Dahlia and her favourite toy: her foxy. I think it's Foxy #6 as after awhile they start to rip and the stuffing all comes out and we get her a new one (she has an old foxy for dog class that has no squeaker and almost no stuffing left, but she still loves that thing).

OMG the puppies. They are so cute. 6 weeks old and so much puppy breath! My favourite part of the afternoon was sitting on the ground with 4 puppies in my lap and eating my camera strap (it survived) while I tried to take pictures of the other puppies across the pen.

I was a bit nervous going into this because puppies are FAST and unpredictable and I was so afraid I'd have a tough time getting photos of them. 4 of the puppies had been playing NONSTOP before I got there so they were pretty tired. The other two slept before I got there and so were more active. But they all were running around for a bit before falling asleep.

So...pictures for those who didn't see them on FB!

Puppy breath x6! )

I hope Stephanie likes them (there are tons more in Flickr; I'll give her a CD with them all on it on Tuesday). I'm really happy with them.

I'm sort of annoyed though that some animal rescue site shared them like they were in need of rescue. Ugh.

Today we went up Fall Mountain, the major extent of our hiking "career." We've been up it 4 times now. It's not the hardest climb but it's enough for people like David and I! And now that I'm resting this evening my toe is aching. Ugh. Really annoyed that I'm STILL having problems with that.

We usually have the whole place to ourselves but today there were many people. And dogs! Most of the dogs were fine. There was Molly, a really sweet lab mix who Dahlia enjoyed meeting. The two labs we saw on our way out from the top were on leashes and we all just steered clear of each other. But then there was the Chihuahua. *sigh* So his owner picked him up once he saw Molly and Dahlia and muttered something about his having issues with other dogs. And they went down below. Well, apparently while down there he decided to just let him off leash and the dog took off away from him, came careening up, saw Dahlia first and went after her. Dahlia, of course, had to be all "IMA GONNA SHOW YOU BITCH!" and tried to pin the little sucker down. I got her away and the other woman who was there with him, put a leash on the dog and said to the guy "I thought you weren't going to let him off leash!" Yeah not the smartest move there buddy. (And later on, on the way down, the dog was off leash again and went after Molly...Ugh).

But other than that it was a nice time. We met a lot of cool people and chatted for awhile with them all. We all hid out under the trees when a rainstorm suddenly cropped up and soaked us all (we got the cameras put away in time! Phew!).

The other reason Tina wanted to run Tugger last night is she wanted me to take pictures of him for her website. I notice she already put a few up, including a new one I got of Dahlia! So I was doing two things in class last night, running between doing my runs and grabbing the camera to get some photos.

So there were no pictures from Novice JWW. I suspect that nothing came out good enough to share because of the total downpour we ran in. They sure were out there trying though. Ah well!

So I ended up caving and buying THREE photos. Because I couldn't decide between two. So here's the ones I bought, free of the watermarking and edited by the photographers to bring out the best in them.

I took Dahlia over to the trails behind the middle school again. Such a nice place to walk and NO ONE around!

I decided to take out just my 135mm lens. I just don't use that enough and it's SUCH an awesome lens.

I took some photos of the dogs I train with at the AKC trial and took some photos yesterday of Teri and Dahlia. And I took some more photos of Dahlia this morning. I just haven't had a chance to post them so here's a bunch from the past few days!
